How does product activation work?
The product activation introduced with SpeedCommander 17 is designed to make it more difficult to use SpeedCommander illegally, without significantly restricting its use by honest users. When first launched, SpeedCommander generates a registration ID that is specific to the hardware. This ID is transmitted to the license server together with the activation code during activation. The license server then creates a license key that unlocks SpeedCommander as a full version. After activation, no further connection to the license server is required, provided that the system hard drive does not change.
Activation status and deactivation
The current activation counter can be queried via the menu command Help | Product Activation | Show Activation Status. SpeedCommander can also be deactivated again using the same menu command. When deactivated, the number of free activations is increased. This allows the activation to be transferred to another computer. If the Help | Product Activation submenu is not displayed (because the menu bar was not reset when importing settings from an old version), the Product Activation menu must be added manually via the Customize dialog (category Help).
Use on a USB stick
For mobile use, SpeedCommander can be activated on up to five USB sticks. The license server creates a license file that is specific to the respective USB stick. A USB license file can only be created on computers with an Internet connection. No Internet connection is required when running from the USB stick. USB activation cannot be undone. Instructions for preparing the USB stick can be found in the Help under Configuration | Installation on a USB stick.
Available activations
Individuals can activate SpeedCommander for private use only on up to five different computers, provided that they are the license holder and the only person using the software. For business use, a single-user license may only be used on a single workstation.
Replacing the system hard disk
The activation of SpeedCommander is tied to the serial number of the system hard drive. Therefore, please deactivate SpeedCommander before replacing the system hard drive using the menu command Help | Product Activation | Show Activation Status. After installing the new system hard drive, you can reactivate SpeedCommander without losing the activation.
Transferring the activation to a new computer
Deactivate SpeedCommander on the old computer using the menu command Help | Product Activation | Show Activation Status. You can then activate SpeedCommander on the new computer.
Request lost activation code
If you have misplaced your activation code and have previously entered your email address via the menu command Help | Product Activation | Update Registration Data, you can also have the activation code sent to you automatically. To do this, go to the activation page and enter your email address. The activation codes registered under your email address will then be sent to you.
Resetting the activation counter
Please understand that we cannot reset the activation counter every time you fail to deactivate. Not least, we also allow five activations for such cases.
